Khanom Learning Center Honored with “Architectural Conservation Award 2024” Category A: Architectural and Community Heritage Conservation at Excellence Level” from Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn

Mr. Thawat Hirancharukorn, Senior Executive Vice President-Operation Management of Electricity Generating Public Company Limited or EGCO Group, was granted a royal audience with Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. The occasion was the royal award ceremony for the Architectural Conservation Awards 2023-2024, organized by The Association of Siamese Architects under Royal Patronage (ASA) at the IMPACT Exhibition and Convention Center, Muang Thong Thani. The Khanom Learning Center was recognized with the  Architectural Conservation Award 2024 in Category A: Architectural and Community Heritage Conservation, achieving the Excellence level.

The Khanom Learning Center is a collaborative achievement between EGCO Group, Khanom Power Plant and ESCO (an EGCO Group subsidiary specializing in power plant engineering, construction, and maintenance), and CMO Public Company Limited, an expert in exhibition design and museum development. The gracious award reflects the success of repurposing an industrial site into a historical learning center, preserving its legacy as a vital power source for Southern Thailand. It also highlights the creative design and development of the space as a hub for energy knowledge, power generation processes, and the harmonious coexistence between the power plant, the community, and the environment.

The Association of Siamese Architects under Royal Patronage (ASA) stated the reasons for the award: The Khanom Learning Center is a rare example of industrial architecture in Thailand's power generation sector. It possesses immense historical and academic value, maintaining its authenticity in form, architectural elements, and engineering. As such, it has high potential as a significant educational resource. This conservation project demonstrates a profound awareness of the building’s value through a comprehensive design process and the selection of appropriate conservation techniques. The internal exhibitions maintain authenticity while providing an engaging narrative through creative spatial adaptation. Supported by a clear management plan, this conservation effort benefits the surrounding community and serves as an enduring learning source for youth and the public.”

Inside the Khanom Learning Center, visitors can explore seven permanent exhibition zones covering the history of electricity, power generation processes, environmental stewardship, and community relations. The exhibitions focus on interactive learning using modern presentation techniques. Additionally, the learning center has developed a Virtual Exhibition system to broaden access to knowledge and hosts an annual Science Week to inspire local youth in Nakhon Si Thammarat and neighboring provinces in the fields of science and technology.

The Khanom Learning Center is open to the public from Tuesday to Saturday, 9 AM – 4 PM (closed on Sundays, Mondays, and public holidays). Students and tourists interested in visiting can register in advance at https://varpevent.com/museum/khanom/.
